2019 Humble Quilts Doll Quilt Swap, Received

I just received my adorable doll quilt from Shannon Ward.  It is very cute and she even hand quilted it.  Every year I think about doing the same, but I know it is just not a gift of mine... I hand quilted a small wall quilt years ago, and that was enough.  I actually attempted doing it in the quilt I sent out this year, but it was terrible and I pulled it out and did machine quilting instead.

The fabrics are a wine-red....

2019 Humble Quilts Doll Quilt Swap

I love Pinterest.  The ability to visually find items is a favorite way to search for me.  In finding pinsperation for this year's Humble Quilts Doll Quilt swap I came across one very humble quilt that really caught my eye.  I wish the image was pinned from the page and not simply from an uploaded portion because I would have loved to know more about it.

This year I wanted to stick with mainly browns.  I did add some fabrics to my civil war stash, but honestly I think it is getting a little harder today to find true reproduction fabrics--or I haven't found a source that I believe is true to the prints.  20yrs ago it seemed easier as many fabrics were being created using prints from the 1800's, today it seems like many of the prints are "inspired".



I had fun with the back.  I also decided to use up some authentic cadet blue scraps that I had kept moving around my quilt room for years.  The prints are so cute!  I know fabric historians would frown against it, but it is a doll quilt and they are in strong/perfect condition.  Better in a quilt than simply being shifted from my desk to drafting table to who knows where.  I don't have a book started for fabric swatches, nor do I want to start one... so that's why they were placed into the fun scrappy backing.

This year my quilt flew to New Zealand.  Wow on the shipping costs.  This makes a few years in a row that I have mailed outside of the US and the spike in costs is really something, even at 10 ounces.  I haven't investigated alternative mailing options, I am guessing they are all similar.  The person I sent to went to the Australasian Quilt Convention and was out of town when the doll quilt did arrive.  She'll be picking it up today so I wanted to wait in posting just in case she saw my blog.  I know people like to post their created quilts for the swap (usually on the facebook page) before mailing, but I wanted it to be more of a surprise for when she opened the package.

Another fun exchange for 2019!  I haven't received my quilt yet, I am not sure where it will be flying in from.  I was an early mailer this year because my heart fell in love with that first quilt above.  Unlike this year, I tend to mail closer to the April 30 mailing deadline :)

Humble Quilts Doll Quilt Exchange

I once again joined the Humble Quilts Doll Quilt Swap. I received a wonderful quilt from Cynthia Nanto.  I love the fabric designs she used and how she focused fun prints into the four patches.


This year my little doll quilt flew all the way to France! I mailed the one on the right to Cecile, and I made a 2nd(left, with the binding still needing to be sewn) for myself. The background fabrics I used with the baskets is too dark/busy, I should have used the wrong side instead.


I also made a little clutch pouch with an extra basket block to mail the little quilt in:

Kids can be like pets with photo bombing!  It took three takes to have just the pouch and no teenager :)

Outside pictures... I guess that pink in the patches just doesn't want to play well for the camera. It looks a lot like my indoor shot from last night.



But the backing looks the most consistent in the outside shot:

2017 Humble Quilts Swap

I finished up my little quilt tonight to send out to its recipient.  I had this one in mind for the last two swaps, but never finished more than 6 diamonds.  I decided to go ahead and use the hexies this year--what good are they just sitting in my folder anyway?  I thought about a different layout, but decided on this one.  The pink in the patches is actually darker, but I couldn't get the colors correct with the photo.



I love the backing fabric. The picture doesn't do it justice.



This one is heading out of the country next week! I hope the recipient likes it, it is definitely a humble quilt with many goofs along with wiggles in the quilting... uffda.  I am a bit rusty with the freemotion.

Quilters Madder SAL

Fun fact.... one of the red dyes decided to "catch" in a few of the white shirting fabrics.  I always find this interesting when this happens to some whites but not others.  I did not have any pink background fabrics in my quilt, but now I do... I'm ok with that.



I arranged some quilts in my hallway.  I have been really lazy lately in hanging anything new, and have had bare walls for a few years.  The blue star quilt was going to be for the doll quilt exchange, but I changed my mind and went with something else.  I blogged about it last year (you can find the post in my 2015 finishes tab).  The black and red quilt was from an ebay auction of 1880's blocks.  I finished it up years ago.  It's wavy, and I love it.  The painting was from my grandma, it was a house that she grew up in at Wagner Mill Pond in Monroe, WA.





the other wall (we need to remove that old thermostat, but haven't gotten around to it yet).  The first quilt was one I received from the 2015 doll quilt exchange.  I love it.  It says Friends are the sunshine of my life in embroidery.  Next is a fall harvest panel that I cut up and spaced in an attic windows view.  And the last was a doll quilt exchange quilt I received this year.  It is looking very fall-ish in my hallway right now.  I need to get working on some Christmas and winter quilts next!
